Situated approximately 30 miles east of Yarmouth and nestled between the waters of Lobster Bay and Pubnico Harbor, you'll find the village of West Pubnico. A bustling fishing community of approximately 2000, it was founded in 1653 by Sieur Philip d'Entremont and is the oldest Acadian village in Canada still inhabited by the descendants of its founder. Its name "Pubnico" was derived from the Micmac Indian "Pombomcoup" meaning "a place where holes have been made in the ice to fish" - an occupation still carried on today.
At the center of the village stantd St. Peter's Church, completed in 1891, after 3 years of painstaking effort. Also several houses in the community date back almost 200 years, one of which has been converted to "Le Musee Acadien" - Acadian Museum, where you will find displayed artifacts pertaining to the old Acadian way of life.
Today, as in the past, the large segment of the population make their living from the sea. As a result, you will find landed here at our wharves; Lobster, Scallop, Herring, Mackerel, Swordfish, and abundant varieties of groundfish such as Haddock, Cod, Halibut, etc.
In consequence, the community has grown and prospered and many other businesses and organizations have been established. Much of their success is due to the fact that we are blessed with access to some of the richest fishing grounds in the world. But, not to be ignored, is the energy, determination, and will to succeed that the present day generation has inherited from its ancestors.
Not lost to the people as well are many of the old customs and traditions - boat building, quilt-making, gardening, to name a few and "Rappie Pie", a traditional food. Indeed, a true accomplishment that all villagers can be proud of is their ability to meld the old with the new to achieve a pleasing blend which provides enjoyment for all. We would be sorely amiss if we neglected to mention the fact that, as in the olden days, the young and young at heart still enjoy to kick up their heels once in a while!
We, at the Red Cap Restaurant, sincerely hope your visit with us will be a pleasant one, and our most fervent wish is that you experience the "Joie de Vivre" that prevails and is uniquely Acadian.
Your Hosts,
Helen & Trina
